April's fool

Robert Harrison nasce ad Austin nel Texas e inizialmente coltiva il sogno di fare l'attore ma un brutto incidente in macchina infrange il suo sogno.

Si dedica allora alla chitarra con passione e fonda nel 1989 una band che chiamerà "Cotton Mather".

L'inzio è in sordina, poi nel 1997 da alle stampe l'album della svolta, si chiama "Kontiki" ed è un piccolo gioiello che ricorda i Beatles di Rubber Soul e Revolver.

L'album arriva a l'orecchio anche di Noel Gallagher che lo trova fantastico, tanto da chiamare i Cotton Mather come gruppo spalla per un tour europeo degli Oasis.

I Cotton Mather pubblicano un altro album dopo Kontiki e si sciolgono, ma la vena creativa di Robert Harrison non si ferma e continua a comporre canzoni, forma un altro gruppo che chiama "Future Clouds and Radar" col quale pubblica altri due album, di cui uno doppio molto bello che porta semplicemente il nome del gruppo.

Poi ci sono altri anni di silenzio discografico prima del ritorno in grande stile che porta alla reunion dei Cotton Mather e ad un progetto molto ambizioso di Harrison, ovvero scrivere 64 canzoni, ognuna ispirata ai versi contenuti nel libro cinese dell'Iching, chiamato anche libro dei mutamenti.

E' ritenuto il il primo dei testi classici cinesi sin da prima della nascita dell'impero cinese, sopravvisse alla distruzione delle biblioteche operata dal primo Imperatore Qin Shi Huang Di.

Fino ad ora i dischi usciti ispirati da questo libro sono due "Death of the cool" e "Wild Kingdom".

Iniziamo allora questo viaggio per conoscere tutte le canzoni nate dalla penna di Robert Harrison e cominciamo con "April's fool".
Questa canzone non solo la troviamo nel primo album ufficiale dei Cotton Mather chiamato "Kotton is king" del 1994 ma una versione differente si trova anche in una sorta di "demo-album" fatto circolare a tiratura limitatissima e chiamato "The crafty flowers arranger" uscito nel 1992.
Stile marcatamente pop, con chitarre elettriche in primo piano e la voce graffiante di Harrison che si muove abile nel testo ironico della canzone.
